Harry Truman?

Gene, I skip Andy who I don't like, BUT you hit me "right on' when you cover Harry Truman and that car trip they made.  I saw a mention of it, maybe on C-SPAN?  He was a great man, even though not that gay-friendly as I recall, but deserves credit for integrating the army, dropping the bomb to save American lives, etc. And the point is right, he was a good man AFTER he left office.  I'm not sure most men hold up after they retire, and to go from being the most powerful man in the world to a small town private life took some adjustment and any ego would have a problem with it.

ARt TERRAIN

After watching the excellent documentary presented by John Phillip Santos and Bihl Haus Director Kellen McIntyre, HUMAN TERRAIN, we now have the message and theme for Political ARt Month. ARt TERRAIN is the word. The terrain is what the military is concerned with when fighting a battle. We here at PAM think that is exactly what we need to consider as we move through this creative time in our nation's history. ARt TERRAIN is what needs to be studied and understood for July 2010.

Andy Warhol:
The Last Decade

February 14-May 16, 2010

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade is the first U.S. museum survey exhibition to explore the work that this seminal American artist produced during the final eight years of his life. Warhol entered a period of renewed vigor and enthusiasm in the 1980s that resulted in what was arguably the most productive period of his career.

The exhibition includes approximately 55 works lent by private collections and institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, and Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. Along with an introduction to Warhol, it is divided into thematic sections based on significant Warhol series: abstract works; collaborations (featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat); black-and-white ads; works surrounding death and religion; self-portraits; camouflage patterns; and a concluding section of the artist’s Last Supper series..

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Grass

Grass(2000) R

Narrated by actor and pot activist Woody Harrelson, this slick and snappy documentary chronicles the history of marijuana use and prohibition from the early 1900s through modern day. Biased toward legalization in tone, the clever if subjective film reveals the absurdity of government anti-grass tactics. Comic Tommy Chong also lends his voice to this informative and amusing illustration of how one substance among many has created such a clamor

Harry Truman was a different kind of President.  He probably made as many, or more, important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence, Missouri. His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and, other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year.  Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the Office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me.  It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it,! writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As President, he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth.  Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices.  Political offices are now for sale (i.e., Illinois).

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician.  And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!"
