The Second Ecumenical Synod

The Second Ecumenical Synod was convened at Constantinople, in 381, called by Theodosius the Great, with 150 to 180 bishops present. This Synod condemned the Semi-Arians who taught that Jesus Christ was of similar essence to the Father (homOIousios) and not of the same essence (homOusis); it condemned Patriarch Macedonius, who taught that the Holy Ghost was created by the Son. Hence the phrase, “One God, in three Persons”, prevails. This Synod formulated the last five Articles of the Nicene Creed. This Synod issued seven canons.

EPITOME of CANON 1

Let the Nicene faith stand firm. Anathema to heresy.

Cf. 2, 5; 6, 1; 19, 2

EPITOME of CANON 2

No traveler shall introduce confusion into the Churches either by ordaining or by enthroning. Nevertheless in Churches which are among the heathen the tradition of the Fathers shall be preserved.

Cf. 8, 34, 35; 1, 6, 7; 3, 8; 4, 28; 6, 20, 30, 39; 15, 9; 17, 3, 11, 12

EPITOME of CANON 5

EPITOME of CANON 6

Even one that is of ill repute, if he have suffered any injury, let him bring a charge against the bishop. If however it be a crime of ecclesiastical matters let him not speak.Nor shall another condemned before, speak.Let not one excommunicated, or cast forth, or charged with any crimes speak, until he is cleared of them. But those who should bring the charge are the orthodox, who are communicants, un-condemned, un-accused.Let the case be heard by the provincials. If however they are not able to decide the case, let them have recourse to a greater synod and let them not be heard, with a written declaration of liability to the same sufferings (ie: of their readiness to be tried by the lextalionis.)But should anyone contrary to the provision appeal to the civil government (Emperor) and trouble him, let such be cast forth.
