About Western Rite Orthodoxy
We have heard much from those who do not necessarily follow "Orthodoxy" but call themselves "Orthodox" with all their political shannigans to destroy and character assassinate, those who believe they can re-invent the proverbial wheel, except in these instances they attempt to re-invent an "Orthodoxy" that defies the ancient epitome of the canons, even liturgical practices and beliefs, including their church names from month to month or, every every few months if not every year. The invention of a "Latin Orthodox Rite" is an invention not accepted by many who are truly "Orthodox" and very "Catholic" in spirit and truth. So, we feel it is time to apprise of you Truth...
While the Antiochian Christian Archdiocese of North America which is in full communion anD unity of purpose with several "Orthodox jurisdictions through SCOBA, being connected to more than twenty Western Rite congregations around the country who worship God in the forms which speak to their hearts, rejoicing to be a part of the Universal Church" - a Church, to which we also belong as Ecclesiastically autocephalous and autonomous but a part of that which is truly One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic; a Western Orthodoxy is real and alive.
The distinguishing difference is that a Western Rite Parish is different from those who hold to a more Eastern or Byzantine Rite.
In 1054 A.D. (after several hundred years of debates, arguments and political shannigans to declare itself above all others in violation of the Seven Ecumenical Council), the Roman branch of the Universal church separated itself from that which is the roots of Christianity itself for they clamed Papal supremacy which culminated in their novel doctrine of "Papal Infallibility." The truth is that the Bishop of Rome is considered to only have a primacy of honor but not be accepted by the true church as belonging to it any longer for it would subjugate itself to the Roman Infallibility idea, an invention which defies spiritual truth.
The Holy Synod of Moscow approved a restored form of the Western Liturgy which was the Liturgy of St. Gregory the Great, and their is the St. Tikhon Liturgy much used by several Orthodox Anglicans who were accepted into Orthodoxy by the Moscow Patriarchate too.
Yet, in spite of all that has gone on, there are those who, over time in history, were able to gain a blessing and become autocephalous and autonomous. This is the History of the AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH as noted by the Lines of Succession page at this web site.
The purpose for the Western Rite is to provide a home in the Orthodox Church for western people of non-Byzantine cultural and religious backgrounds and to witness the Catholicity of hte Orthodox Church in spirit and truth.
Western Rite Orthodoxy exists throughout the world and in the United States in spite of its seeming "new-ness" but allows for those of the west to better find themselves rooted in their own western spiritual ethos than the Byzantine character of the Eastern rites.
People of both Rites worship together and the clergy are, for the most part, interchangeable while sharing the same hierarchy and spiritual unity of the faith.
As an authentic Church of the New Testament, the mission is to make our country an Orthodox nation where possible. As history has shown, whenever it has been given the opportunity to freely teach and live its Faith, it has always won the hearts and souls of men and women to the Truth. This was evident in Alaska when the first Russian Orthodox Priest(s) arrived, out of which came a great Saint and several others since, one of whom is our Patron Saint John Maximovitch of Shanghai and San Francisco, blessed Father Seraphim Rose who has been providing us with spiritual truth and understanding in an Orthodox manner which speaks to the heart and soul.
When compared to the Byzantine liturgical forms, the Western Rite is simpler, less redundant, obviously shorter, and employs a hymnody (the hymns used) that is familiar to a great many American Christians. More precisely, the Western Rite, is a theologically corrected form of worship used by the Latin Church (Roman) or the Anglican Communion. In some Western Rite congregations, the Liturgy may be a Latin or English form of pre-Vatican-II Roman Catholic worship. (In France, all native French Orthodox Christians, who number in the thousands, use this form of worship as aided by St. John Maximovitch). Other Western Rite parishes use a liturgy based on the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. The Liturgy of St. Tikhon follows a similar approach. Modifications, while important, would not be terribly noticeable to even the most regular worshippers. Two of those alterations include the deletion of the filioque (“and the Son”) in the Nicene Creed and the addition of a stronger Epiclesis in the Eucharistic prayer said by the priest at the consecration of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.
The third section of the Nicene Creed affirms the Church's belief that the Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the triune Godhead. History shows that the phrase “and the Son” (or, in Latin, filioque) in speaking of the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father was initially an addition by a local council of Western Bishops that was originally even rejected by the Pope of Rome. The Eastern bishops argued the filioque causes a blurring of the roles of each of the three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in the Godhead. It is from the Father that the Son is begotten and it is from the Father that the Holy Spirit proceeds, through the Son.
Besides the removal of the filioque in the Creed, the Western Rite Liturgy requires the priest to petition God the Holy Spirit to act in changing the gifts of bread and wine into the life giving Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The words used in the Liturgy are: “And we beseech thee, O Lord, to send down thy Holy Spirit upon these offerings, that he would make this bread the precious Body of thy Christ, and that which is in this Cup the precious Blood of thy Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, transmuting them by thy Holy Spirit. AMEN, AMEN, AMEN.”
In addition to these two changes, the Western Rite includes other indiscernible changes that Latin Roman Catholics and most Anglo-Catholics (High Church Episcopalians) would find to be either familiar or certainly acceptable. As some Latin Rite Roman Catholic parishes as well as Protestant Churches continue their decline by denial of basic Catholic faith, doctrine and worship by turning to inclusive language liturgies, which refer to God as mother (to name but one example) and promulgating woman “priests,” - - - many traditional Catholic Christians of both the Roman and Anglican backgrounds are turning to the Orthodox Catholic Church.
By doing so, these Christians have retained familiar forms of worship and at the same time insured themselves of remaining within an ecclesiastical communion, and under godly, Orthodox bishops who teach and practice the ancient Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (a California Corporation), the NORTH AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH and the AMERICAN ORTHODOX CATHOLIC CHURCH (New Mexico Corporations) are an integral part of the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith. There are those, as explained above who attempt to re-invent Orthodoxy in their own image for power, while inventing a Latin Orthodox liturgy that is nothing more than a liturgy of the Latin (Roman) church which has no blessing from any of the Orthodox jurisdictions whatsoever... but viewed as being a schismatic church from the AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (their Mother Church which anathematized them for unholy actions and errors...) and who have been anathematized by others in the past for their defiance to Holy Orthodoxy which is, like the AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH, a part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith.
The actions and activities of those who have been anathematized is much similar to the actions and activities of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the National Council of Churches (NCC) who have attempting, with much impact, to be harbingers of the advent of a new religion who use inclusive language and the syncretism found in them is not too different either. Their re-invention of liturgical forms and formularies to accommodate their agenda to satisfy a personal ego is not Orthodox or even Catholic. They are not even a part of that which we have described as relating to a Western Rite Orthodoxy whatsoever.
For those who are familiar with the varying liturgical forms, you may wish to view some of those liturgies by clicking here.
NOTICE to VISITORS ABOUT OUR E-MAIL POLICY
Apostle1.com, Apostle1.org and Apostle1.net
We are an educational, News-informational and research Web Site dedicated to providing such as befits those who seek things pertinent to the Orthodox Catholic Christian Faith and life.
There are unscrupulous people on the internet these days. Some of them are not who they claim to be and in order to disrupt honest spiritual pursuits, they are known to send out e-mail under someone else's name or the name of another church or jurisdiction with attachments. Anyone can do this, if they want. Some of them exist in Toledo, Ohio... Some in Texas... Others in California and many other places... Some are "haters of truth" who follow (whether they are willing to admit it as their are also those who do not even know what they are doing because they seek glory to satisfy their vanity and pride).
If you should ever receive an e-mail with an attachment purporting to be from anyone at "apostle1.com" - "apostle1.org" or even "apostle1.net" - - - know that our policy is to not send out e-mail from any of our domain names with an attachment. Therefore, don't open it!
Unless we know exactly from whom an e-mail comes... nothing is clicked on or opened, not even attachments! You would be surprised from whom 'hate' e-mail arrives and what attempts and extremes they go to make their e-mails "look" official when it is a lone person or persons who hate TRUTH and love lies, hate anything from being posted that involves TRUTH because they may be affected with exposure to the LIVING TRUTH of Jesus Christ's Love. They HATE some of the news, quotes, and such as to inform the general public. Some of them pose as clergy, while a few are actually clergy from various "other" offshoot AMERICAN ORTHODOX CHURCH jurisdiction(s) of the same name of which we are their former MOTHER CHURCH (Toledo, Ohio); having joined in and with "Independent" churches who have nothing to do with us or even true Orthodoxy, but seek to go out of their way to character assassinate and disparage religious web sites who do not meet their own brand of standardization which is evidence of their being not truly "Orthodox" "Christian" or even "Catholic" no matter what their nomenclatured corporate name may be.
They are just as bad, as the modern day Ecumenists of the World Council of Churches, the World Council of Bishops and more.
Remember, anything that is a HALF TRUTH is not truth but a lie! Many there are that you may know who fit those descriptions... pray for them. Pray that God will send his Spirit of Truth upon them and lead them to Salvation through tears of Repentance, conversion of their cold and calculating hearts toward seeking forgiveness from God and those whom they attempt to harm.
Those who receive e-mail from us, know who we are and from where we send mail.
If you are of another jurisdiction, you too could find that your parishioners, clergy and faithful might become subject to the same as we have recently found.
Let this be a warning to visitors so as to be safeguarded against unscrupulous e-mails which contain viruses, worms and unsavory material from person(s) organizations or institutions that are more self-serving than uplifting and informatively news worthy.
For ourselves, we have, as in the past, so once again, acquired the assistance of those who are able and capable of tracing e-mails back to their source and taking appropriate action in North America.
We have learned that the organization we subscribe to, whose members come from various legal and law enforcement backgrounds amongst other areas of society, are committed to the faith even though they may hold different theologies. Yet, in their monitoring of electronic communications of various persons or people, they do not always make haste to bring perpetrators to justice until after enough evidence has been gained in order to build a solid case. We do not always know what information they have gained, but we do know the organization, whom we've been asked not to name, has had a 97% success rate in bringing to justice and obtaining a conviction against individuals, people, and sometimes even religious organizations of a persona that gives the appearance of both secular and religious bearing but who abuse and misuse technology. The organization views those who abuse and misuse the internet and other technologies as nothing more than a form of "domestic terrorism" - - - - and, it would seem to appear that the courts are in agreement!
Those kinds of people, organizations, etc. who misuse and abuse communication technologies are no different than those who attempt to use coercive measures, and in some instance, even blackmail for the same idea is involved... to cause havoc and wreckage, to destroy the spirit and activity of those who struggle in the faith out of pain of heart for the Orthodox Church which is TRUTH. The degree that some have been known to go to, as seen by other jurisdictions, is to take advantage of questionably mentally challenged or those who have a lack of education and understanding to get them to make statements, even outright lies, in writing, in order to destroy.
Yes, our Metropolitan Archbishop, +Joseph Thaddeus, SSJt., Ph.D. strongly defends the Seals of the Confessional for such leads to true Repentance in thought, word and deed whereby the penitent is required to make amends, where possible, to seek forgiveness of those harmed by his actions whether real or imagined, and to give his forgiveness to those who have harmed him before taking the Holy Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The reality of this understanding is bound up in and with the findings for which cause he, himself, had been character assassinated by his detractors who claim the courts prevented him from breaking the Seals of the Confessional which is not the truth at all.... Click here to see what another bishop's findings are...
The workings of Holy Spirit will not be daunted by those who attempt to cause disruption! It is for these and other reasons that you are urged to read what true repentance and forgiveness means for real "Christians".
