Russian Church Abroad to discuss unification with Church in Russia
MOSCOW, December 2 (Itar-Tass) - Hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox
Church
Abroad (ROCA) are planning to discuss the mechanisms of unification
with
the Russian Orthodox Church inside Russia when they convene a
special
council of bishops late next year or in early 2005, the Archbishop
of
Berlin and Germany Marc told Itar-Tass Thursday.
"To discuss all issues pertaining to a possible administrative and
eucharistic communciation with Moscow Patriarchate, the ROCA needs
to
convene a council of all of its hierarchs," the Most Reverend Marc
said.
He indicated that clerics from all the dioceses are expected to
take part
in it and the lay will also attend.
The Most Reverend Marc admitted that some of ROCA followers did
not
support a rapprochement with the Russian Church inside Russia.
As an explanation for this, he named the absence of clarity on
whether or
not Moscow Patriarchate was going to renounce the 1927 declaration,
whereby
the Church pledged loyalty to Soviet government.
It was that declaration that finalized a split between the
populous camp
of clerics and ordinary believers, who had found themselves in
emigration
after the 1917 revolution and ensuing Civil War, and the remaining
clerics
inside Soviet Russia, compelled to make courtesies to the Bolshevik
authorities to save the remainders of Russian Orthodoxy from brutal
pounding and purges.
For decades, the two branches of a once united church would not
even
speak to or notice each other. The situation began changing only at
the the
end of the 1980's, when the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov's
personal warm
feelings towards the Church made it possible to celebrate the
millennium of
Christianity in Russia on a broad scale.
The actual rapprochement between the two Churches began in 2003,
with an
exchange of visits and delegations. In 2003 and 2004, ROCA hierarchs
met
with Patriarch Alexy II and top officials of Moscow Patriarchate and
took
part in a number of major church functions in Russia.
Archbishop Marc said the problem of denouncing the 1927
declaration was
discussed at the recent third round of talks in Moscow.
"Those negotiations are far from easy, but earnest approach and
scrupulous work give us grounds to hope that the results will be
good," he
said.
ROCA has about 300 parishes across the world. Moscow Patriarchate
has
about 20,000 parishes in the former USSR and in dozens of foreign
countries.
