Bishop Wenski Succeeds Orlando Prelate

ORLANDO, Florida, NOV. 15, 2004 - The Roman jurisdiction's Pope John Paul II of the Catholic Church accepted the resignation of Orlando's Bishop Norbert Dorsey, who soon turns 75, paving the way for Coadjutor Bishop Thomas Wenski to take over governance of the Roman jurisdiction's diocese of the Catholic Church.

The latter was an auxiliary bishop in Miami when he was appointed coadjutor of Orlando in July 2003.

Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Oct. 18, 1950, Thomas Wenski studied at St. John Vianney Minor Seminary in Miami and later at St. Vincent de Paul Major Seminary in Boynton Beach. He was ordained a priest of the Roman Archdiocese of Miami in May 1976.

He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's of divinity from the Boynton Beach Seminary and in 1993 a master's from the School of Sociology of Fordham University in New York.

Father Wenski served three years as associate pastor of Corpus Christi Church, a mainly Hispanic parish in Miami. In 1979, after briefly ministering in Haiti, he was assigned to the newly established Haitian Apostolate of the archdiocese. He was associate director and then director of the Pierre Toussaint Haitian (Roman) Catholic Center in Miami from that time to his appointment as a bishop in 1997.

He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Miami in June 24, 1997.

The Roman Diocese of Orlando ministers to about 400,000 Roman Catholics in nine counties.
